Abstract

The Centre for the Study of Cartoons and Caricature is based on a collection of over 85,000 pieces of original cartoon art, published in British newspapers. The majority are political and include such leading twentieth century cartoonists as Strube from the Daily Express, Low from the Evening Standard, 'Vicky' from the Daily Mirror and Evening Standard, and more recently Garland from the Daily Telegraph. There are also collections of social cartoons and strips such as Andy Capp from the Daily Mirror. The Centre was established in 1973 with the aim of collecting, conserving and making accessible twentieth-century British cartoons; and by the accumulation of material, data and expertise, to pursue and promote a wide range of research. It seeks particularly to encourage the use of cartoon material as evidence, and not simply as illustration. To date we have catalogued over 30,000 cartoons in a computer database, which is searchable via the web, http://library.ukc.ac.uk/cartoons/, organised many national and international touring exhibitions, and published a variety of books and catalogues on cartoons and cartoonists. The Centre is unique in Britain and is recognised as being at the forefront of cartoon collections around the world. It combines the roles of preserving the history and heritage of British cartoons with that of encouraging the study of them and their comment on society, politics, politicians, social attitudes, prejudices, stereotypes, fashions and taboos.
