"Cry, The Beloved Country." News Sources and Media Framing of the Marikana Massacre in South Africa

Abstract

This study examines how media frames were constructed in the South African print media following the Marikana massacre, in which 34 miners were shot dead by police. Framing refers to a theory on how individuals, groups and entire societies organize, interpret and communicate social reality. According to a popular understanding of media framing, elements such as problem definitions, causal explanations, moral judgements and treatment recommendations affect how receivers of news understand an issue. While media framing research has been popular within political science for a good four decades, few studies have looked closer into the association between news sources and the frame emphasised by a news article. Two South African newspapers were studied during nine days following the Marikana massacre using a qualitative and quantitative approach. By using a mixed method approach, this study moves beyond some of the validity and reliability difficulties commonly found in framing research. The findings suggest that there seems to be an association between the main source cited in an article and the frame emphasised that can be linked to the interests of actors. Furthermore, this study evaluates the method of studying framing in the media by using cluster analysis as proposed by media and communication researchers Matthes and Kohring (2008). It is concluded that this method yields better results in terms of reliability than distinctively qualitative methods and it is suggested that future research explore the benefits of using mixed methods.
